Donald Trump reiterated Monday that he supports the idea of El Salvador taking custody of American citizens convicted of violent crimes—a controversial stance he’s floated before.
“We have bad ones too, and I’m all for it because we can do things with the president for less money and have great security,” Trump said during a meeting with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. “And we have a huge prison population.”
Legal experts note that deporting U.S. citizens to serve sentences abroad would likely raise serious constitutional and legal challenges, as there is no clear legal pathway for transferring lawful U.S. citizens to foreign custody.
