Next month, the Department of Education will resume collecting federal student loans currently in default.

These payments were placed on hold approximately five years ago due to the pandemic. In addition to lifting this hold, the department will restart a program that collects debts through garnishing wages, tax return refunds, and Social Security benefits.

Borrowers are encouraged to contact the Default Resolution Group at the student aid office to arrange repayment plans before May 5, when payments will resume.

Roxanne Garza, the Director of Policy at EdTrust, is joining us from Washington, D.C., to explain how this plan will affect individuals who are already struggling to make payments.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explains why the Trump administration is resuming collections.
