Malcolm X had spent years in the Nation of Islam, an organization that emphasized Black pride, separation, and retribution. While it gave many Black Americans dignity and self-worth during the worst years of Jim Crow, it also painted all white people as devils—a necessary overcorrection to centuries of white supremacy. But Mecca flipped the script.
In his letter from Saudi Arabia, Malcolm wrote, “I have eaten from the same plate, drank from the same glass, and slept on the same rug while praying to the same God… with fellow Muslims whose eyes were the bluest of blue, whose hair was the blondest of blond.”As the African Diaspora saying goes, “I am because we are, and we are because I am.”
