MORE INFO
Gucci has announced that creative director Sabato De Sarno is set to step down after just a few seasons with the house. The Kering-owned label revealed in a short statement to press that the designer was immediately parting ways with the company, and that the upcoming show in Milan would be presented by the in-house team.

The news will come as a shock to many in the industry, which is already seeing plenty of change at the top of the world’s biggest luxury brands. It was almost exactly two years ago that De Sarno was announced as the replacement for Alessandro Michele, the brand’s longtime creative director, who is now heading up Valentino.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude to Sabato for his passion and dedication to Gucci,” Stefano Cantino, Gucci’s CEO said. “I sincerely appreciate how he honoured Gucci’s craftsmanship and heritage with such commitment.”

De Sarno had been tasked with rethinking Michele’s maximalist Gucci into something more commercial, and he said he wanted the clothes to be more wearable.

“I want to see you wearing Gucci, not Gucci wearing you,” he told Bazaar in an interview last year. “I don’t want the clothes I make to be about me. I want them to be Gucci. When people choose my clothes, I want them to be able to wear them. Because to me, it’s important to have things that have life.”

This announcement comes off the back of a lot of change in the industry, as well as months of rumours about reshuffles at the top of the biggest brands in the world, which this news will continue to fuel. At the end of 2024, we saw Hedi Slimane leave Celine, John Galliano leave Maison Margiela and Matthieu Blazy nab the top spot at Chanel, while Kim Jones announced his departure from Dior Homme just last week, and we’ll see Sarah Burton’s Givenchy debut in less than a month. It’s a lot to keep up with.
