7.3.2025 #TheOtherSideOfChange: Battlefield for Justice: California Rising | Protest, Power & the Fight for Change | S1 E16

California’s in the headlines again—but this time it’s not for celebrity drama or tech layoffs. The streets of L.A. are lit with resistance, with students, artists, workers, and community members standing up against injustice in real time.

From student encampments to labor strikes to calls for ceasefire in Palestine, California has once again become ground zero for people-powered movements. And what’s wild is—this isn’t new. California has long been the heartbeat of radical protest in this country. The Black Panthers were founded in Oakland. The United Farm Workers organized out of Delano. And let’s not forget the Watts Rebellion and Rodney King uprisings that forever reshaped American conversations on policing and justice.

Black Star Network contributors Jamira Burley and Brea Baker dissect the protest movement in California and discuss the parallels between yesterday’s protest movements and today’s push for change with organizer/educator Tiffany D. Loftin.
