Shawntel Johnson is an Afro-Caribbean American artist from Brooklyn, New York, who now lives in Columbus, Ohio. Her work generally incorporates brilliant colours and reoccurring themes of Afrocentrism and Afrofuturism, surrealism, the Divine Feminine, body positivity, sex positivity, cannabis, and queerness. She is self-taught and well-versed in multiple mediums ranging from conventional to digital.
Her primary goal is to transform people’s perceptions of themselves, particularly those from the African diaspora, into something more beautiful, heavenly, ethereal, and non-monolithic.
She sees the human body as heavenly art, even when in compromising circumstances and creates sensuous art on occasion to confront the stigma that is all too frequently attached to the human body and its inherent tendencies.
