Anderson is expected to assume the creative leadership of LVMH stablemate Dior, replacing Kim Jones and Maria Grazia Chiuri.McCollough and Hernandez started Proenza Schouler as design students at Parsons in 2002. The pair quickly became poster children for American fashion in the new millennium, as their line attracted boosters including then-Barneys executive Julie Gilhart and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.Their collections fused bold prints and textures with trendy 2000s silhouettes, forging a dialogue between American sportswear and European couture aesthetics. A hit accessory, the PS1 gear bag, drove the business for years while an increasingly researched, cosmopolitan touch positioned the brand at the heart of New York fashion’s efforts to counter the dominance of Paris and Milan.The brand became a downtown darling, referencing cultural touchpoints including the artists Helen Frankenthaler and John Currin, filmmaker Harmony Korine and singer Annie Lennox. But the label struggled to replicate the success of its more utilitarian PS1 bag. Subsequent handbag families featured sculptural yet supple shapes, including ruched or winged tote bags and crescent-moon wristlets.“Their eclectic creativity and dedication to craft make them a natural choice to build the next chapter for Loewe,” LVMH executive Sidney Toledano said in a statement.LVMH is recasting a number of key creative roles this year — including at Loewe, Givenchy, Fendi and Dior — as it seeks to spark a new cycle of growth after luxury’s post-pandemic euphoria ground to a halt last year. Group sales fell 2 percent last year amid lingering inflation, political uncertainty and ongoing sluggishness in the key Chinese market.Rivals, too, are seeking creative renewal, with Kering naming Demna artistic director of flagship Gucci, while Chanel prepares for Matthieu Blazy’s debut show.At Loewe, following up Jonathan Anderson’s eclectic, captivating vision and fast pace of innovation will be a challenge. But McCollough and Hernandez inherit a brand that enjoys higher-than-ever visibility and industry goodwill. In the event of a successful sale, Forever 21 may “pivot away” from a full wind-down of operations to allow a deal to take place that would see it continue as a going concern.It’s the clothing brand’s second stint with bankruptcy. Its first in 2019 was rife with fighting, left creditors little recovery and resulted in the closing of hundreds of locations it had during its heyday.A group of buyers — including Simon Property Group, Brookfield Corp. and Authentic Brands — teamed up to buy Forever 21 out of bankruptcy through a venture called Sparc Group. That group partnered with Shein in 2023 as Forever 21 attempted to solve some of its operational issues.US retail group JC Penney acquired Sparc in December to form Catalyst Brands, in a deal which saw its previous shareholders maintain minority stakes in the company. At the time of the merger, Catalyst said it was exploring strategic options for the operations of Forever 21.In this weekend’s filing, Forever 21 pointed specifically to competition arising from foreign companies’ use of the ‘de minimis’ exemption, a loophole which allows retailers from abroad to ship low-value packages to the US without import duties and tariffs. According to the press release, the bird is “caught in a moment of pause, she encourages us to imagine imminent flight, and ultimately its freedom”.The Northern Irish designer was appointed creative director of the LVMH-owned Spanish luxury house in September 2013. Anderson created his namesake brand JW Anderson in 2008 and caught the attention of Sophie Brocart, senior vice president of LVMH fashion ventures at the time — notably with his Autumn/Winter 2013 menswear collection. It was the founding collection of his “shared wardrobe” approach, based on the idea that men could pick and choose from women’s wardrobes, just as women have long been able to do from those of men’s.LVMH took a minority stake in the brand in 2013. At the same time, Loewe was seeking its next creative director following the departure of Stuart Vevers. Then LVMH Fashion Group CEO Pierre-Yves Roussel made a bold move: he entrusted the then-29-year-old designer with the creative direction of Loewe. Anderson’s appointment was accompanied by organisational changes: the design studio was moved from Madrid to Paris, while the JW Anderson brand remained based in London.Loewe, a leather goods brand founded in 1846 and bought by LVMH in 1996, underwent a significant transformation that paid off. Under Anderson’s tenure, sales went from €230 million in 2014 to €1.07 billion in 2024, according to Morgan Stanley estimates. Ready-to-wear took off — Anderson’s collections were experimental, clean, but at the same time, made for daily life. Meanwhile, leather goods went from strength to strength; he notably created in 2015 the Puzzle bag, which became a staple. He kept craftsmanship at the centre and created the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize in 2016 to support and give visibility to vanishing crafts.He is a 360-degree designer with a precise vision for brand building. Loewe campaigns like the ones starring Maggie Smith, Jamie Dornan and Daniel Craig always got people talking. “There’s a quirkiness and great consistency to them,” says Serge Carreira, associate professor at Sciences Po Paris. Gucci chief executive Stefano Cantino and Francesca Bellettini, deputy CEO of Kering, said this week that Gvasalia — who goes by the professional name Demna — had been the only choice for Kering, after 10 years as creative director at Kering-owned Balenciaga. The decision was made “without doubt,” said Cantino, who worked for two decades at Prada and became Gucci boss last summer. “Demna is one of the best creative designers to interpret the contemporary culture.” Bellettini added: “Gucci performs best whenever you light the sparkle of creativity and artistic vision.”The appointment is a bold decision for a company trying to turn around its performance, amid a downturn in the luxury goods sector. Gucci accounts for about half of group sales and two-thirds of profits at Kering. The brand’s sales declined 21 per cent on a reported basis to €7.7bn between 2023 and 2024, while operating income for the full year fell 51 per cent to €1.6bn.Kering hopes Demna will revitalise Gucci, following last month’s departure of Sabato De Sarno, who had been its creative head for only two years. Demna will take up the role in July.Kering has been under pressure to find a “named” designer for Gucci, after elevating De Sarno from Valentino, where he was an unknown studio head, into the top position. “Under Sabato De Sarno, Gucci looked too bland for a brand that has been relevant,” said Luca Solca, a senior analyst at Bernstein covering global luxury goods. “They tried a number two and it didn’t work. Gucci needs a heavyweight creative director, who can get the Gucci consumers excited.”Demna enjoyed phenomenal success at Balenciaga, with an offering that spanned both couture and popular streetwear. Kering does not break out individual earnings, but under Demna, Balenciaga became the fastest-growing brand in the portfolio.Among his bestsellers were the giant platform Triple S sneaker, which sells for £825, and a sock-footed Speed trainer. He also had considerable success with his bags, including the Rodeo — which retails from more than £2,000 — and Le City from the 2000s, which he revived last year.His tenure, however, has not been without controversy: in 2022, the brand became engulfed in a social-media scandal following an advertising campaign that was accused of endorsing child abuse and pornography. The fallout was especially acute in the US, one of the brand’s biggest markets, and contributed to a major dip in sales.Kering this week brushed off the reputational risk associated with the appointment, insisting that new checks and training systems within the company meant that such crises could not happen again.Nevertheless, Solca said pushing such a strong fashion agenda and making it “more exciting” meant some risk was inevitable.Demna arrives at a brand sorely in need of a change in fortunes. Under Alessandro Michele, its creative director from 2015 to 2022, Gucci’s revenues tripled to more than €10.5bn. However, his successor De Sarno delivered only six collections before his departure was announced in February. Gucci has a number of bestsellers for Demna to work with, including its Jackie bag and its logo belts and horsebit loafers. So what, exactly, is going on?What is PrettyLittleThing? PrettyLittleThing is a U.K.-based retailer known for clingy, colorful, and affordable clubwear and vacation pieces. Its website used to feature an extensive plus-size collection and regularly included women of color and curvy models. The brand has done a number of fashion shows, including a New York Fashion Week show with Naomi Campbell in 2023 and a Miami Swim Week show in 2022.What is the rebrand about? In early March, customers noticed a shift in the styles and models. The clothes were more modest and conservative, including austere blazers, pantsuits, and sweater sets in muted colors. The familiar models, mostly women of color, have been replaced by thin white women with “clean-girl makeup” and soft updos. (Think trad-wife era over BBL era.) Even the site design has shifted: The formerly pink, white, and black website is now shades of brown. The official sign of the new era appeared during Paris Fashion Week with a glitzy, star-studded party the brand hosted. It was easy to mistake the fast-fashion label for a high-end fashion house, especially since models Jasmine Tookes, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Naomi Campbell were on the guest list. A press release for the party stated that “this soirée offered a glimpse into the brand’s refreshed identity following its ambitious rebrand: a new era that seamlessly marries trend-driven energy with refined sophistication.”What are people saying online? Those most skeptical of the rebrand include PrettyLittleThing’s former target audience, who argue that the look and the prices have changed but the quality has not. The materials are still predominantly polyester, which most shoppers are critical of. Fabrics aside, the shift toward a more covered-up look accurately displays the political rise of conservatism.One Twitter user said, “Every model is skinny, every model is white (minus one), and plus sizes are basically gone. This rebrand feels elitist and racist.
